ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The third iteration of SPARK programming was hosted in the Columbus Center, the thriving hub of the 2019 Brilliant Baltimore festival, an umbrella event enveloping the LightCity and Baltimore Book Festivals.

The pop-up gallery exhibition was once again a Towson University and UMBC collaboration featuring the work of faculty and student artists as well as a full schedule of performances, events, and interactive activities curated by Catherine Borg and made possible through the ongoing support of PNC Bank

Amanda Burnham, Carrie Fucile, Colette Searls, Corrie Francis Parks, Evan Tedlock, Figg and McCormack, fourhead, Jenee Mateer, Jon Lundak, Kyohei Abe, Lisa Moren (with  Dr. Tsetso Bachvaroff), Lynn Cazabon, Nahid Tootoonchi, Phil Davis, Ryan Schmal Murray, Timothy Nohe, and Vin Grabill.

Special Programming
Saturday, November 2 – SPARK Gallery

5:30-7:30 p.m. – Illuminated Storybooks: A community drop-in art-making workshop inspired by Brilliant Baltimore: Facilitated by Towson University Museum Education & Community Ed Practicum and Methods of Art Education students, with faculty support from professors Stacy Arnold and Diane Kuthy.

Monday, November 4 through Sunday, November 10 – SPARK Lounge
5-10 p.m. – Animations in the SPARK Lounge:
short films created by UMBC and Towson University students — an eclectic mix of animated narrative, documentary, music videos, and experimental work pushing the boundaries of art, style, and technology.

Friday, November 8 – SPARK Lounge
7 p.m. – Moth Broth:
Through haunting harmonies and surreal experiments in psychedelic witch-pop, Moth Broth (Jake Bee, UMBC IMDA MFA Jason Charney ’20, and Greg Hatem) explores myth, sexuality, ritual, and animal behavior.
8 p.m. – UMBC Jazz: Students perform their original compositions with Director of Jazz Studies Matt Belzer, featuring Ricky Jefferson on piano, Zach Powell on guitar, Miles Malone on bass, and Pat Clark on drums.

Saturday, November 9 – Second floor of the Columbus Center 
7:15, 8:15, and 9 p.m. – Bonnie Lander
and bioluminescent organisms perform across-species meditation in the installation What is the Shape of Water? by Lisa Moren and Dr. Tsetso Bachvaroff.
